You Couldn’t Have a Honeymoon Without Mead

Ah, yes, the honeymoon. It can encompass so many things nowadays from vacationing to far off beaches, trekking through rugged mountains, or dining in romantic foreign lands.

Honeymoons are one of the exciting perks after the hard work of planning a wedding and the perfect time for spending some much needed one-on-one time.

The "honeymoon," however, wouldn’t be possible without the humble honey bee, and of course, mead!

Although the traditional honeymoon that we think of is all about relaxation, back in the day there was one major task to be accomplished during a couple’s honeymoon.

The newly married husband and wife needed to get busy and continue the family bloodline. Aka, making babies! (Bow-chick-a-bow-bow!)

This was an important part to all families. To ensure that the couple was doing their ‘newly-wed duties’ they were gifted a month’s worth of a potent aphrodisiac by the bride’s father in the bride’s dowry. That aphrodisiac was, of course, mead!

Since the calendar was based on lunar cycles, and they were gifted a lunar month’s worth of mead, the term ‘honeymoon’ was coined. It’s literally a moon’s worth of honey.

Luckily for everyone today, honeymoons have become much less, shall we say, goal-oriented.

However, if you’re looking to bring a little tradition into you or someone else’s upcoming nuptials, perhaps a bottle of mead is a classic touch that will tip a hat to an ancient tradition.

We won't even make you buy a month's worth.
